A flashback…
When John was in Europe, Noah took his class field trip to Disney On Ice: Dreams Do Come True. As it got closer we saw commercials on TV for it, he was NOT excited. It was about the Disney princesses from Tangled, Princess and the Frog, and Cinderella.
One day in the car we were talking about it, I was trying to get him excited about it, and he made a comment that shocked me. He said “Dreams don’t really come true, that’s just in the movies.” We tried to get our kids to understand that most movies are pretend, there are no aliens on Mars that still moms, no Transformers are not real and you can not have one, and so forth. Never did we think this would be something they took from that lesson. So, I asked him if he thought the guys on the Rangers dreamed of playing baseball when they were little? Then I thought of every musician, actor, football player, etc that he knew and basically asked the same idea. He got my point and problem solved, until he asked, “so did your dreams come true?” What a loaded question. I laughed and mumbled “yeah I dreamed of being an at home mom of 5.” So, I tried my best to answer the question.
I explained dreams sometimes change. I started out wanting to be a marine biologist and then I became a mom and teacher. The thing about dreams coming true is being happy. I assured him that I was happy and dreams do come true in real life.
He did enjoy the show, as the picture of Noah (in yellow) and his friends show. It was recommended that the kids bring jackets, since it was going to be chilly. After a disagreement over what jacket he could wear, he didn’t take any. I asked him when he got home if it was cold. He said “I don’t understand why I got cold, I had my legs behind the chair in front of me.” Gotta love him.
