A day of football- both kinds

It was the day of the soccer playoffs and a big day in college football.  OSU took on West Virginia and A&M took on Alabama.  Soccer games started at 9:30 and then the championship game was at 1:00; still enough time to get home before kick off of the football games.  Problem was OSU and A&M played at the SAME TIME!  I’m SO glad we have the ability to record games.  It has saved us so many times this season.  All day John and I fought over which game we would watch first.  Technically it was his turn, I already got to watch an A&M game before him once; but that didn’t mean I couldn’t try to convenience him I should go first.

Makaela was determined to carry her own chair to our spot.  It’s a little heavy for her, but she managed.  She was a very determined little girl. We looked up the weather before we left and thought we would have one more day of shorts and flip-flops. There was a little more wind and cloud coverage than we thought; so when we first got to the fields it was a little chilly. After we got set up we tried to keep warm by huddling.

Noah’s team was up first. They had beaten this team every time and Noah kept saying how easy it would be.  We tried to tell him you can’t count anyone out like that.  You have to always try your best and play like you are going against the best team.  They did win.  Noah scored 3 goals at the beginning.  He did very well.  In the end it was 5- 2.  They were moving on to the championship game.

Then it was Caleb and Ian’s turn.  Their game was the most stressful game so far this season.  The team they played they had tied once and lost to once.  We knew it was going to be a tough game to play. The boys played their hardest, and it was a fight for both teams.  Ian was hit in the stomach when a kid kicked the ball pretty close to him.  The coach had to carry him off the field, but  John went to check on him and a few minutes later Ian was wanting back in.  I guess he just had the wind knocked out of him.  The other team was up by one when Caleb scored.  No one else could score after that and the game ended in a tie.  So, they played 5 more minutes; first goal wins.  No goal.  Then they had a shootout.  The sad thing was we only have one really strong kicker on our team.  She scored, but after that no one else did.  The other team kept scoring.  I really thought they should have called it since at one point there was no way our team could have made a come back.  It was finally over, but they put up a good fight.  Caleb and Ian got their medals after the game.  John took pictures as the coach handed them out.

We grabbed lunch and hung out before Noah’s game.  Noah was hoping that the other team would be tired after the long game against Caleb and Ian.  Again we said never under estimate anyone.  Noah’s game was another stressful game.  At one point we had the two defenders and the goalie playing in a huddle with something unaware that the other team had a break out run towards the goal.  Noah and a few other players fought hard, but the defense really loss the game.  The other team didn’t have all their players show up and so their best players were out on the field the entire game at positions that helped them win.  I know it sounds bad, but I wish we had been able to pull those kids out of the game that were joking around on the field.  I don’t think it was fair to those that were trying their best and giving it their all when they were on the field to be stuck on the sidelines and watch others goofing off.  I know it is just a game, but I just can’t help it.  I guess that is the downfall of team sports.  Noah said a teammate made a comment that he wished they got the big trophy.  Noah told him at least they got a trophy and not a medal.  Way to be positive.

When we got home I took a few more pictures of them with their medals and trophy.

Then they changed and we got ready to watch some football!!  I thought it was really funny how Noah divided his outfit between our two teams.  I wanted a picture of him and of course other boys wanted to pose too.  The boys went outside to play football and Makaela followed.  She did not want to pose for a picture.  I caught her sneaking outside.

We have devised a pillow system to watch a football game in our house without the other person knowing what is happening in their game.  We take the throw pillows off the couch and put them on the entertainment cabinet to block the scores that flash at the bottom of the screen.  John also was quick to fast forward and have me cover my eyes when they would do an update during his game.  John watched the OSU first half and did his best to keep what was happening from me.  But we had a few mistakes and I was VERY curious to see what had happened in the first half for my Aggies.  So, being the best husband in the world he let me watch some of my game during his half time.  When I knew his game would be starting back up I told him he could switch back, but he let me finish the half.  The Aggie game was another stressful game for the day.  After our half we watched OSU’s second half and beat West Virginia.  OSU had their third string quarterback in and he did great.  I’m impressed that the team has that many good quarterbacks.  I started cooking dinner during the game afterwards we ate dinner.  Before dinner my cell phone was going off like crazy.  I knew it was either my family fussing or cheering over what happened.  John turned the phone over so I couldn’t see any of the texts.  Once dinner and baths were done we got back to watching the A&M game.  I was very anxious to see if the Aggies could hold onto the win.  It was a very stressful second half, but they did it!!  I then looked at the texts from my family and joined in on their celebrations.  I stayed up way past my bedtime trying to calm down from it all.  It was a day full of stressful games, but the Aggie win was AWESOME and well worth it.
