When we were heading to Oklahoma for Vance’s birthday, we stopped in Norman of all places at Best Buy. We were going to pick up a movie for Vance since he just bought a HUGE 3-D TV. I went to check out with the movie and had all the kids with me. The young man checking me out asks for my rewards information and I give it to him. Then he noticed our address and says “You guys are far away from home. Are you brining your kid up for college?” I just start laughing. I look around at my kids running around, picking on each other, and being well LITTLE kids and I think they are smart, but not that smart. Then I also think to myself- if I was taking a kid to college it WOULD NOT be in this town!!! I politely say “No, they are a little young for that.” in the midst of my thoughts and laughing. As he finished up, he said “I hope you didn’t think I was saying that you were old.” I just laugh again, and say “It’s alright.” Nice try to cover it up, but the damage was done. John thought it was hilarious since we usually get asked if we started having kids when we were 12! As we drove away I started thinking even if I was a teenage mom (16) I still have three years before my kid would be college age!!! This was exactly a week before my birthday.
The day arrived! My birthday is NOT that big of a deal to me. I ask my kids to be nice, so I can enjoy the day without fussing at them. I am fine with no big gifts or flowers from my husband. My birthday is a normal day. I believe it comes with being a mom, because life doesn’t stop and let you “celebrate”. You still have to get up make lunches, get kids to school, etc. I’m not complaining even with the normal everyday stuff, a birthday does feel like a special day when just about every family member calls you. Oh and I can’t forget all the people on Facebook that take time to post a Happy Birthday. I thought to myself on more than one occasion that if I’m ever having a really bad day I should change my birthday on Facebook to that day. You can’t have a bad day when you look at your phone and see all the push notifications!
My birthday was a nice family day. I had my babies wearing my favorite team.
My birthday reminded me just how blessed I am. Sappy Warning... look away if you are not into that…. My greatest birthday presents are the people that are in my life. My husband, kids, parents, siblings, and friends. They keep the smile on my face no matter how old I get!
