Not acceptable

Eli is a character.  He is always saying things that you have to take a double take and ask yourself “Did my three year old just say that?” Yes, he did!  This was one of those days.

January 22, 2013
I just finished mopping the kitchen floor and I was putting things back in there.  I was trying to get Eli to go back outside to play so I could work without kids under foot.
Me:  Go outside and play, your brothers will be home soon.
Eli: Do we have to go get them?
Me: No.
Eli: Yeah, we don’t have to go get them anymore!
Me: No we will go get them tomorrow, just not today.  Today they ride the bus.
Eli: I don’t want to go get them.
Me: We have to go get them tomorrow, so they can go to church school.
Eli: That is not acceptable.
Me: What? (one of those did he just say that moments)
Eli: Church school is not acceptable.
Me: (having to calm myself to figure out why he is saying that instead of just getting upset at him) Do you even know what not acceptable means?
Eli: Yep, uuummmm, Nope.
Me: It means that it’s not right.  That you don’t like that idea.  Do you not like them going to church school?
Eli: No.  I don’t get to go.  I want to go to church school too.
Me: (so glad that it is just him feeling left out) Well, next year you get to go to church school, so is it acceptable now?
Eli: Yes!  I get to go next year!!!!

Later that evening when John gets home, Eli very excitedly tells him that he gets to go to church school with the big boys.  John looks at me puzzled.  I tell Eli that’s next year, you get to go next year.  I’m a little worried what will happen when he has to drop off his brothers and he doesn’t get to go tomorrow.  We may be back to being “not acceptable”!

On a side note, Can you tell what Mom says when the kids do something that they are not supposed to?  Yep, it’s not acceptable!  I guess they do a lot of things that are not acceptable to me.
