When we went to Hobby Lobby looking for Valentine’s Day supplies, we found a mini cupcake tin. John loves mini cupcakes, so we decided to make him some. Thursday, while John was at work the little ones helped me make the cupcakes.
A note for the next time I make mini cupcakes-fill the cups up with batter and cook for about 12 minutes. I don’t know why but the cupcakes didn’t rise very much, so following the directions to fill the cups 3/4’s full made really small cupcakes. The time was just a matter of watching the first batch and testing them with a toothpick. Everyone loved the mini cupcakes.
I decided to pick the big kids up from school. This got them home at about 3:20 instead of 4:30. John had mentioned getting off work early since he was taking Friday off. I wanted to boys to have time to do homework and help decorate for John. Ian and I hung the streamers in the doorway of our bedroom and the “Happy Birthday” sign. The Noah and I blew up balloons. Okay, Noah blew up 1 balloon in the time it took me to blow up the rest. Caleb tried to blow one up but it just didn’t work, so Noah took over for him. Noah was very proud of himself- being able to blow up 2 balloons!
When we heard the garage door go up the kids and I hide in the bedroom and waited for John to walk in. I videoed the boys hiding and jumping out to surprise John, but of course John figured it out and yelled as he walked into the room. The boys still jumped out and yelled too.
Then it was fish and pasta for dinner. The fish was something new I hadn’t tried. I found a recipe online and modified it of course for my picky eaters. It was really easy to make and almost everyone ate it. I hadn’t told John what I had planned for dinner just incase it didn’t work out. So, he was surprised and impress that it turned out well. Yes, you could say he is surprised any time I cook!
Makaela enjoyed the pasta and some left over steak, we weren’t sure if we should give her fish just yet. We also found it interesting that she ate the cupcakes. Since her first birthday (cupcakes) she hasn’t cared for any cakes- wedding, birthday; but she seemed to like the cupcakes. Maybe, it’s that she likes home-made, not store bought.
I guess it was a simple and nice birthday for the best dad and husband ever!
