For the Aunts: A Fashionista!

In my family I haven’t ever been called fashionable.  My sister Lauren was and is the fashion queen in the house.  In high school and when we lived together in college, I always got- “Is that what your wearing?” with a snide undertone.  I still get it today, but I’m okay with it.  When it comes to fashion, well I lean towards comfort than fashion.  Then you have Mary, who is the sweet, cute, homecoming queen.  She will throw on the t-shirt and blue jeans with hair pulled back in a bun (more of my style); then she will put all the girls’ to shame when she wants to dress up.  Thankful I moved out by the time Mary really got into fashion or I would have really gotten it every morning!

When I was having boys, all I heard from my sisters was “girls’ clothes are cuter,” “why can’t you have a girl?”, etc.  Now I have a girl, and I have to admit she is becoming somewhat of a little doll for me.  I may not really want to dress up, but I will spend a lot of time and thought getting her outfits together.  John found some UGG like boots when we were shoe shopping, so we got her a pair.  Mary has a pair of course.  Then while shopping with my sister Lauren, I was told Makaela needed some skinny jeans to go with a shirt I picked out for her.  Well, I found some skinny jeans for her.  So in honor of my sisters, when we had some cooler weather move it I dressed Makaela up.

Makaela was not on board.  She was fine with the jeans, though I’m a little worried if they shrink she might get stuck in them like my sister Bridgette did.  Everything went bad when I put her socks on and tried to get her boots to zip up with the jeans inside the boots.  She fussed and fought me, but I finally got them zipped.  Then I stood her up and she got mad again when she couldn’t walk.  I felt a little bad that she was suffering for a fashion statement, something I rarely ever do.  But she made it through and I got her to wear them for about half the day.  She sort of figured out how to stand up and walk in them a little.  I finally decided to let her change as she kept falling over trying to go to the playroom.  We had run our errands and she put up with me trying to take pictures, I guess she didn't have to stay cute any longer.  What a trooper!

I’m a little worried that Makaela will grow up really liking to get all dressed up and as she gets older we will have fights about what she can and can not wear.  I wonder if Aunt Mary and Aunt Lauren will be around for that stage?!  As for now, I’m enjoying playing dress up while she lets me- or doesn’t have the choice!!

Since I initially wrote this post and just didn’t get around to posting it, Makaela has worn her boots a few more times.  She didn’t fight as much the second time and seems to walk a little better in them.  She still gets frustrated with them after a few falls and just wants them off.  I’ve compromised with her- I only make her wear them when she will be riding or held mostly and isn’t able to walk; but the minute we get home they have to come off so she can walk.  Compromising with a 1 year old!

Oh and another side note: John can’t believe she has skinny jeans!  Boy is he in for it as she gets older!!!  I thought I was going to have issues.  Poor Daddy!
