More Halloween Decorating

It’s kind of funny that John and I are not big Halloween people.  We don’t dress up, have thrown or go to big parties.  Yet, we currently have the only decorated house in our subdivision.  I think it came with having kids, always wanting to do something fun for them.  We started our outdoor decorations with a blowup pumpkin and two friendly looking ghost.

Slowly our decorations got bigger and bigger.  We had a spider idea for a Trunk or Treat at church when we were pregnant with Noah.  It was a spider from trash bags and foam pipe covers for legs that draped over the back end of our truck at the time.  The spider idea worked.  Our scary has always had to be G rated.  Okay, less scary than G rated because my almost 7 and 5 year old still make me fast forward the “witch” part in Snow White!  Plus, John and I are not scary fans either.

One year searching for ideas online John found pictures of spider webs for the outside of your house.  Of course we didn’t buy one online, John decided to make it.

This was our first year with the spider web at the old house in 2009.  John really did all of this by himself.  I think I just watched or held a rope when needed.  Basically, he started with the center line from the house to the knot, then added rope from the knot to the corners.  Once the main lines were staked he then tied knots and made the circles around the web.  The next year we added another pumpkin, but it didn’t make it through the season when someone tripped over the tie downs.  Stay on the path people!

Well, our new bigger house we had to add some more.  Okay I say “we”, but mainly John, again!  He made the new web. Now I have to tell you that John is very crafty, but he also likes to have a plan.  So, he started by taking pictures of the house then using the computer to add the web.  I wish he had saved the picture it made my  organization stuff not look so crazy.   Once he had his plan we were all outside watching him work.  We did help hold the ropes.  Noah and Caleb even climbed the ladder to give him the ropes.  This time was not as difficult.  He put a hook on the house and then made four lines staked in the ground.  Once that was done he just tied knots across.  I tried to make sure it didn’t look so straight.

Then we added with some modifications the web from the old house.  All together it looks pretty cool!
The funny thing is the weather changed as we worked on the webs, so by the time we finished the dark gloomy clouds added to the pictures.  The boys said it made it look like a real haunted house.  Maybe not a “real” haunted house but at least one that people are going to be expecting candy at!
