Surviving the First Week

This first week of school is a survival week.  We are just trying to figure out - What can we do to make life easier?  What routine works?  What doesn’t?  It’s a work in progress.

Monday-
The boys are so excited about school that I sent them back to bed at 5:00am.  No need to wake up just yet!  Then at about 6am Noah is back up again.  Everyone got up and was excited about the start of school.  Ian was so excited- jumping up and down everywhere that after he finished breakfast, I sent him to watch for the bus 30 minutes early.  John went to work a little late so he could see the boys off on the first day.  The only one who was smart enough to stay in bed and miss all the excited energy was Makaela.  I did my mommy duty and took pictures of everyone.

The Crew Waiting for the Bus

Off They Go!
Once the boys got on the bus Ian exclaimed “YESSSS!!!!  I’m in charge NOW!!!”  Can’t tell he has two older brothers that like to run the show!  I did have to remind him that he was the big brother while they were gone but I was still “in charge”.  Now the rest of the day one might question that, since he did what he wanted and took his time doing whatever I asked him to do.

About 4:20 the boys showed up on the bus.  It was very different from the smiles and excitement from the morning.  They were tired, red faced, upset and well, the pictures say it all.

They are the last ones on and the last ones off the bus.  The 100+ temperatures make the bus an oven in the afternoon and the ride home miserable.  Also, Noah said he didn’t make any new friends and was upset.  Noah is very dramatic and social, so not having time to make new friends or find ones from last year ruined his day.  On top of that he didn’t sleep much the night before; not a good combination.  Grumpy Noah is NOT fun!  Caleb said he didn’t meet any new friends either, but is less dramatic about it.  Caleb’s calmness helped balance Noah out.  All in all the first day was good.

Eli was worn out too :)
Tuesday-
The boys were up once again before I could wake them.  They were not as excited as yesterday, but still got ready without too much fussing.  John had talked with the boys especially Noah, about making today a good day.  The plan was to be positive and meet new friends, so they were I think a little apprehensive. Ian was calmer since he had gotten into trouble Monday.  Everyone was giving him a hard time about NOT being in charge, especially his big brothers.  Eli decided to join Noah and Caleb and had his book bag on while we all waited for the bus.  Makaela woke up but played in her bed.

The book bag trio

This afternoon they came home with smiles.  They were still worn out from the bus ride, but feeling better since they were able to make new friends.  Noah and Caleb take after their parents when remembering people’s names.  When asked what their new friends’ names were they went blank.

Wednesday-
The one thing that I’ve notice this week is that they still like to hang out at breakfast in the morning, which causes constant reminders from mom to stop talking and eat.  They talk and eat slowly while I make lunches.  This morning the menu called for 6 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  2 for each of my boys (John included).  Noah had some dental work done last Friday and can’t eat chips just yet, so an extra sandwich helps fill him up.  John well, he just likes to have 2 sandwiches and I guess Caleb felt like giving it a try.  I can only imagine what it will be like when all 5 are in school!!!  This morning Makaela decided she needed to join in the fun and wanted out of bed.  So we waited for the bus while Makaela practiced walking.

After the boys left and Makaela ate her breakfast we went outside.  Ian practiced writing his name and drawing shapes with chalk on the driveway.  I had hoped that the day would be a smooth one but, I had to make a phone call and it changed everything.  Noah’s dental work included pulling a tooth and putting in a spacer.  I had noticed that the spacer looked like it was in his gums- not touching the front tooth like on Friday.  I had called and talked to the dentist on Tuesday and after looking at it again we thought we probably should take him in.  When I called today they said come on over.  I was glad they could fit him in so quickly, but I really wasn’t sure how it was going to go.  Noah had spent an hour and a half on Friday in the chair with them working.  The dentist office we’ve taken him to is awesome and I couldn’t ask for more kid friendly dentists, but it is still rough on a 6 year old.  I got myself and the kids ready, we picked up Noah and took him for what I prayed to be a quick and easy trip for him.  It wasn’t.  After about an hour we walked out and have an appointment again in 3 weeks.  After trying really hard to make the “one size fits all” spacer work they had to take a mold of him mouth and send it off to get a custom one made.  Through it all Noah is one tough boy!!!  He is okay with having to go back.  I think it's only due to the dentist explaining that the next time would be quick and easy.  Don’t know if I would have been so understanding.

So after getting him back to school and getting home I was personally worn out.  I prayed that the rest of today would be downhill instead of the uphill climb like this morning was.  It was better.

The boys got off the bus and they had smiles again!!!  Even though Noah wasn’t there all day and missed the morning recess he still had a pretty good day- just tired.  In 105o weather they don’t have recess after lunch, instead have made time for it in the cooler 95o mornings.  Caleb enjoyed his day as well.  I'm so glad he is having a good week.  He was nervous about going to a new school this year, but it seems to be going well.

Noah has homework every night; this week we just had 15-20 minutes of reading, next week starts spelling words.  We have started the routine of him coming home getting a quick snack and reading at the table while I work on dinner.  It took some convincing since, like every kid the last thing he wants to do when he gets home is more work!  We are hoping this frees up the evenings for play time and family time.

Thursday-
The end is in site!  I decided to wake up early and make sausage biscuits.  I think I lost my mind since I was up at 6 and no one else had to be up until 6:30ish.  I had opened my first Dr. Pepper of the day before 7am.  Makaela joined us on the porch to wait for the bus.  Noah and Caleb were in a silly mood and ready for a good day.

Silly boys in the morning

I got the bright idea to run to the store with just the 3 younger ones.  It was a last minute realization since I thought I would be going on Friday.  While making my list I figured out Makaela's formula wouldn’t last.  This trip I learned that we HAVE to go to the stores before lunch.  Makaela is not a good shopper after lunch!  Oh well, better luck next time.  I missed having Noah and Caleb to help out.  They really are big helpers!!  I did still manage to have dinner ready and homework done by the time John got home from work.  I guess I’m making some progress on this new routine!

As for the boys when they got home you could tell the week was wearing on them.  Caleb was still a smile and Noah well, it’s Noah!  They are still making friends and not remembering names.  I was impressed that Noah said he met this girl who played football with them for a little bit.  I had visions of what could be Makaela one day!

A Good Day

An Okay Day
Friday-
Last night was not good.  For some reason Noah has been having bad dreams this past week and has trouble sleeping.  On top of that, last night his sinuses decided to give him problems.  At 1am we were up.  I tried to get him to just blow his nose and go back to bed.  John being the Awesome Dad, got up with him tried nasal spray, a glass of milk and they decided to sleep on the couches.  They looked comfy this morning as I got up at 4am with Makaela crying.  Everyone went back to sleep till about 6 when Eli- the alarm came to my bed and I told him “Not yet, go back to sleep”.  That was my snooze.  He went back to sleep and I was waking the boys up by 6:30.  We were all dragging this morning, but we made it with time to spare.  We all watched for the bus once again.  I couldn’t tell if Noah just wasn’t in the mood for pictures this morning or if he was starting towards a bad day.  As for Caleb he was smiling and being silly with the little ones.  He really is enjoying Kindergarten.

At about 4:10 we all go sit on the front porch and watch for the bus.  This has been added to our daily routine.  Also asking about every hour “is it time to watch for the bus?”  Then once it hits about 3 it happens about every 10 minutes.

Today was a good day.  Everyone came home smiling and ready for the weekend.  We have survived the first week of school!!
