Caleb celebrated his 5th birthday on the 7th. Just like every kid he is growing up so fast. He was a tiny little boy when he was born. I went out a bought a preemie shirt so I could take his birth announcement picture because everything else looked so big on him. So sweet and so tiny!

He may not be tiny anymore but he still is a sweet kid. His brown eyes shine when he smiles and he seems to smile all the time. He’ll curl up on the couch with you to watch TV and always HAS to tell his Daddy good-bye in the morning. He is also a bundle of energy always doing something. Amidst all the craziness of little boys he does have his calm side. He has become such a good big brother. He is always trying to make Makaela laugh, helps Eli get his breakfast in the morning and teach Ian anything Ian doesn’t already claim to know.
When we were picking out the play set Caleb had picked another model because it had a telescope on it. He was so upset when we picked the one we have but after some explaining that we could just buy one and put it on this one he was okay. So for his birthday he got the telescope. Also he had been asking for a new bike since he had outgrown his other one. He tried riding Noah’s bike one day and loved it so much all he kept doing was bugging Noah to ride his. Noah was just as excited as Caleb was about getting a new bike. Of course big brothers can’t share all the time! After the presents we enjoyed some Captain America cake and watched Caleb ride around on his new bike. And in Caleb’s mind “It’s the best Birthday EVER!”

So I have to tell about what else went on besides Caleb’s birthday. I was planning on leaving the day after for a girls’ weekend and my family was coming up for the birthday and to stay with the kids while John was at work when I left the next day; so the morning was full of cleaning up and other chores. The boys are always excited when they know they are going to have someone over, so they were not focused on cleaning and kept wrestling and playing around. I was worn out with all the constant “stop playing”, “you didn’t pick up…”, “you call that clean?”. It was almost lunch when I took a bathroom break and heard screaming. It was Noah which usually means he barely got hurt but he is going to get the most drama out of it. So as I walked through the house I met him in the living room he was crying and holding his head. I asked what was going on and through the sobs he said something and pulled his hand away from his head- BLOOD!!! The head really does bleed!!! It was running down his face and arm and I yelled for him to get off our white carpet and get in the bathroom. As I held a towel to his head to get it to stop bleeding; fussing the whole time at the boys because I knew they had been rough housing and this happened, I got the story out of Caleb and Noah. The story was they were wrestling and Caleb pushed Noah into a bookcase where their fossil rock sat on top. As the bookcase was bumped down came the rock onto Noah’s head. I of course fussed at them for wrestling and playing too rough and then for the fact that someone could have really gotten hurt. By this time I had figured out that no stitches were needed just had to keep pressure and ice until Noah’s head stopped bleeding.

So after I thought the bleeding was under control and cleaned blood out of carpets and clothes we had lunch. My family got here during naps after lunch. Noah of course was awake- I had told him he neeed to stay awake just incase he had a concusion (you'll see a reference to this later). We kept noticing that his head would start bleeding again, so we went to work trying to figure something out. We couldn’t use band-aids because of his hair and amazingly enough I didn’t have in our first aid kit any ace bandages. With some Aggie Ingenuity we put a gauze pad on his head then wrapped it with an elastic wrap John had used when he sprained his ankle before.
Noah thought he was a kung-fu fighter, but played hurt when needed. In true Noah style he had gotten back some of the attention meant for the birthday boy. A family member had called to wish Caleb a happy birthday and when Caleb was told to come talk to them Noah asked “Why do they want to talk to him? I’m the one with the hurt head.” Of course he was answered with a “Hello, whose birthday is it?”

When John went to pick up the cake after work he picked up some liquid bandage and wrap so we could make sure he didn’t bleed on his pillow through the night. As I kissed Noah goodnight on his wrapped up head he asked "Can I go to sleep?" I thought what a crazy question- "Yes you can go to sleep." Then I remembered it was because I had told him earlier that day he couldn't, so I reassured him he was fine and that he had a hard head!
I know that boys are crazy and I know that this isn’t the last time that they will be fighting and someone gets hurt, I just pray that it winds up like this time not being a trip to the ER.
